CSF HUB:  JASON & CARI

Community Supported Foodscapes founder Shalom Matthews is working with James and Cari Grimes to create a Permaculture design for their two acre property which is currently serving as the CSF hub and demonstration site.

Community members interested in learning how to grow their own food are invited to participate in the implementation of the design for the sake of hands-on, immersive learning, with the added bonus of strengthening communal bonds.   See the ABOUT section for a thorough explanation of the CSF "hows" and "whys"

CARI & JASON'S VISION

1. What do you like most/least about your land?  We love the space, the soil, the location, the bamboo and palms for privacy.  We love having chickens wonder around and space for the dogs to explore.  Love seeing wild birds.   We love the anticipation of growing our own fruits and vegetables to consume ourselves and not be reliant on the store

2. In addition to growing food, what other sorts of activities would you like to make room for?  A fire pit area, hammocks, and space for our dogs to run.  A pretty outdoor shower would also be awesome, and we want to create privacy from streets and neighbors.

3.  Are there any specific issues you want to address?

    a.  Noise from the road.

    b.  Water pooling in the front yard.

    c.  The space under the back stairs could be utilized in a manner that looks more attractive (e.g. plants or garden etc)

5.  What outputs are you hoping to get?  lots of fruits and vegetables to give to people:  eggs, honey, flowers, herbs.  Also hoping to be able to teach the children to grow and maintain plants and give them daily responsibilities / tasks.

6. How much time weekly can you dedicate to executing and maintaining the design? During the summer I can do more to get everything done and implemented.  For maintainance maybe 8-10 hours per week.

7.  Are there any micro-climates on the property?  Unsure.

8.  Will you need to change any of the existing structures on the property?  Not other than moving the fencing

9.  Do you see the need to build additional structures?  More fencing is needed. And we'll need a path to navigate the food forest--maybe lined/defined with logs. Maybe a trellis to grow taller plants.

11. What do you see as the main features of the design?  Veggie Patch, Food Forest, and Chicken run.

12. What specific plants do you want to grow?  Open to anything edible/medicinal.
